Journey Across Kenya’s Wild Heart

Wildlife, Scenic Wonders, and Authentic Local Experiences

The North Kenya Adventure is an 11-day 4×4 self-drive safari for explorers seeking freedom, discovery, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Beginning at Lake Naivasha, you’ll spot hippos and flamingos, explore Crescent Island’s grazing herds, and hike, cycle, or climb the dramatic cliffs of Hell’s Gate.

Heading north, Soysambu Conservancy offers sweeping views over Lake Elementeita and close encounters with Rothschild’s giraffes. At Ol Pejeta, you’ll witness black and white rhinos up close and visit East Africa’s only chimpanzee sanctuary, before journeying into Samburu, Shaba, and Buffalo Springs to encounter the unique “Samburu Special Five,” vast elephant herds, and vibrant local culture.

The adventure concludes in the misty Aberdares, where waterfalls cascade through forested valleys and wildlife roams beneath the peaks. Along the way, you’ll also encounter lions, leopards, buffalo, reticulated giraffes, Somali ostriches, beisa oryx, gerenuk, Jackson’s hartebeest, and abundant birdlife, all while camping under starlit skies or pausing at iconic lodges.

Day 1: Lake Naivasha

Route

Nairobi ➞ Lake Naivasha

Drive

101km / 2-3 hours
Approximately

Your adventure begins at the Intu Africa & Intu4x4 offices with a full briefing on your vehicle, equipment, and itinerary. You’ll then have time to stock up at a nearby supermarket before setting off for Lake Naivasha, one of the Rift Valley’s most beautiful lakes and home to a thriving population of hippos.

Accommodation/camping suggestion

Camp Carnelley’s offers a beautiful lakeside campground with an excellent restaurant, making it a favorite stop at Naivasha. From here, you can also book a scenic boat ride on the lake for close encounters with hippos and birdlife. The nearby Fisherman’s Camp has a lively atmosphere and a good restaurant as well, though it’s often busier with larger crowds and fewer noise restrictions in the evenings.

Highlights

Highlights include watching hippos wallow and flamingos gather along the lake’s edge, walking among wildlife on Crescent Island, and unwinding in the natural geothermal spa at Hell’s Gate National Park.

Day 2: Hell’s Gate / Crescent Island

Route

Lake Naivasha ➞ Hell's Gate

Drive

4km / 10 minutes
Approximately

From your campsite, it’s a short drive to Hell’s Gate, a compact 68 km² park known less for big game and more for its dramatic landscapes. Here you can hike, cycle, or even try rock climbing among towering cliffs and volcanic formations, while also visiting Africa’s first geothermal power station. Alternatively, you can book a boat ride directly from camp to Crescent Island, where a guided bush walk offers the rare chance to stroll alongside giraffes, zebras, and other grazing herbivores.

Accommodation/camping suggestion

Same as previous night.

Highlights

Enjoy a guided walk through Hell’s Gate Gorge, cycle past zebras beneath striking red cliffs, and marvel at the volcanic rock formations of Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower. On Crescent Island, experience close encounters with giraffes, antelopes, and abundant birdlife, making it a paradise for photography and wildlife enthusiasts.

Day 3: Soysambu Conservancy / Lake Elementeita

Route

Lake Naivasha ➞ Soysambu Conservancy / Lake Elementeita

Drive

65km / 2 hours
Approximately

Follow the scenic northern shoreline of Lake Naivasha drive up Eburru Road, winding through the picturesque Eburru Hills before arriving at Soysambu Conservancy, a private reserve set on the tranquil shores of Lake Elementeita.

Accommodation/camping suggestion

Soysambu offers several excellent campsites, with our favorites being Flamingo and Pelican, both of which require pre-booking through their website. Facilities include a simple bucket shower and washroom, and the team will provide firewood and water for your stay.

Highlights

The conservancy offers breathtaking views over Lake Elementeita and the Sleeping Warrior Hills, which can be climbed with a ranger’s guidance. It is also celebrated for its population of Rothschild’s giraffes and its rich birdlife, with flamingos and pelicans among the many species found here.

Day 4 & 5: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Route

Soysambu Conservancy ➞ Ol Pejeta Conservancy

Drive

160km / 3-4 hours
Approximately

Exit the conservancy and head north towards the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a highlight for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly those interested in rhinos and chimpanzees.

Accommodation/camping suggestion

Ol Pejeta offers a range of camping options, from truly private sites—completely unfenced and without facilities—for a wild, immersive experience, to the public campsite, which is equally charming and well-suited for a more comfortable stay.

Highlights

Ol Pejeta is East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary, home to nearly 200 rhinos, and also hosts the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Visitors have the chance to spot the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—alongside other remarkable wildlife, including Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest.

Day 6, 7 & 8: Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves

Route

Ol Pejeta ➞ Nanyuki ➞ Samburu National Reserve

Drive

300km / 5 hours
Approximately

Leave the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and drive towards Nanyuki, where you might stop for lunch at the iconic Barney's Bar & Restaurant by the airstrip or at Le Rustique in town, and restock supplies at The Cedar Mall. From there, continue north along the A2 to Samburu National Reserve, with the neighbouring Shaba and Buffalo Springs Reserves offering equally stunning landscapes and wildlife.

Accommodation/camping suggestion

The public campsite in Samburu sits along the river near the Ranger’s HQ, offering a convenient base for exploring the reserve. Alternatively, head to Shaba Reserve for our favorite spot, the Robin Hurts campsite, perched on the riverbank for a truly private and serene experience.

Highlights

Highlights include spotting the unique “Special Five”—Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and beisa oryx—encountering large elephant herds, and enjoying authentic cultural experiences with the Samburu people.

Day 9 & 10: Aberdares National Park

Route

Samburu ➞ Aberdares National Park

Drive

180km / 3-4 hours
Approximately

Head back down south, passing Nanyuki before turning off toward Aberdares National Park, a stunning high-altitude reserve renowned for its dramatic scenery and breathtaking vistas.

Accommodation/camping suggestion

For a break from camping, the iconic lodges Treetops and The Ark provide direct views of waterholes and unforgettable wildlife experiences. In the northern section of the park, Cedar Retreat is ideal for guided walks led by rangers, offering a more intimate way to explore the area’s scenic beauty and wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to travel the North Kenya Adventure?

The ideal time is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to March, when wildlife viewing is at its peak and the roads are easier to navigate. These months also offer the best weather for camping and outdoor activities.

Can you arrange accommodation along the route?

Yes, we can help you plan and book accommodation at each stop—whether you’re looking for scenic campsites, comfortable lodges, or a mix of both. We’re happy to tailor the experience to your travel style and budget.

Can I do the loop as a self-drive, or do I need a guide?

This route is designed for self-drive explorers with some off-road experience. However, if you prefer added safety and local insights, a guide can be arranged to enhance your experience and help spot wildlife.

Do I need a 4x4 vehicle for this route?

Yes. A fully equipped 4×4 is highly recommended. While some sections are on paved roads, many stretches traverse rough tracks, conservancy roads, and sandy or rocky terrain where a standard vehicle would struggle.

How much time should I plan for the North Kenya Adventure?

We recommend allocating at least 11 days to fully enjoy the route, allowing time for wildlife viewing, hiking, cultural encounters, and camping without feeling rushed.

Are park and conservancy fees included in the rental price?

No, park and conservancy fees are not included in the itinery cost or vehicle rental. These fees vary depending on your route and choice of accommodation or campsites. We can help you estimate and plan for these costs in advance.

What kind of driving experience do I need for this route?

While the route is designed to be accessible, some off-road driving experience is recommended, especially for navigating muddy trails or steep forest roads. We provide a full handover briefing, including route advice and equipment training, before you hit the road.

Can I combine this route with other adventures?

Absolutely. The North Kenya Adventure can be extended or linked with trips to the Maasai Mara, Mount Kenya, or coastal destinations for a longer, more diverse Kenyan experience.
